Seeing Through the Haze: The Air Gap Challenge in E-Paper Displays

E-paper displays are valued for their low power consumption and paper-like readability. However, when the front light is activated, some screens appear grey and text can look blurry. The main cause is not insufficient brightness, but air gaps between the cover glass, light guide plate, and display panel. These gaps create reflections and stray light, reducing contrast and making fogginess more noticeable.

To solve this issue, manufacturers use optical full bonding, which fills air gaps with optical adhesive to create a continuous optical path and minimize reflections. Two common solutions are OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive), ideal for flat and medium-sized displays, and OCR (Optically Clear Resin), suited for demanding applications requiring greater mechanical stability and design flexibility.

Optical bonding improves readability, reduces glare, increases contrast, enhances viewing in bright environments, and supports thinner display modules.
